Day by Day Schedule

At 6:00 AM, departure occurs from Arequipa to the Colca Canyon National Reserve. Following a two-hour transit, arrival is made at an Andean camelid breeding farm (llamas and alpacas). The location is situated at 4,200 meters (13,780 feet). A family will host a traditional local breakfast.

This typically involves a soup prepared using wood. Following breakfast, an introduction to the llama and alpaca herds takes place. Activities include learning about ancestral techniques and daily life in the Andes. Participation in activities related to llama and alpaca breeding is expected.

Examples include sheepskin fiber shearing disease treatment reproduction techniques and demonstrations of fabric and handicraft production using 100% natural alpaca fiber. A small offering to Mother Earth (Pachamama ritual) is performed. Lunch is prepared with the local family. After this experience the group proceeds to Chivay at 3,600 meters (11,811 feet). The local market is visited.

The thermal baths of Chivay are available as an optional activity which can be moved to the next day. Hotel accommodation is provided. Alternatively an overnight stay in Yanque at 3,200 meters (10,499 feet) is possible. This option allows for a lower altitude and direct engagement with a local family. This includes wearing traditional attire and preparing dinner and breakfast with them using local organic food.

At 6:30 AM, the group visits the traditional square of Yanque. Traditional dances such as the Wititi, a cultural heritage of the nation, are observed. The next stop is the Condor viewpoint. This location allows for observation of the Andean Condor, with a wingspan of approximately three meters.

The Condor Cross viewpoint is known for condor nesting and provides views of the Colca Canyon’s depth.

The canyon exceeds 1,200 meters (3,937 feet) in depth. A walk along the canyon’s edge is available. This walk provides exclusive views of isolated communities within the canyon. These walks are conducted on local paths. The landscape and views of the canyon and mountains are observed.

The return to the Antahuilque viewpoint occurs. This location features agricultural terraces dating from pre-Inca and Inca times. These terraces are used by local people for cultivation of Andean products such as native potatoes quinoa wheat barley and beans. The tour continues to the right bank of the Colca avoiding tourist heavy locations. A visit to a colonial church in the Colca Valley is conducted. Arrival in Chivay occurs for a traditional Andean Novo lunch. The return to Arequipa follows. This concludes the experience of high Andean life in the Colca Canyon. The Colca Canyon’s high altitude can cause altitude sickness. Acclimatize by spending a few days in Arequipa before the tour. Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity upon arrival. Coca tea is traditionally used to alleviate altitude symptoms.

What to Pack

Layered clothing is essential due to temperature variations. Include warm layers for cold mornings and evenings. Comfortable hiking shoes are a must. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a camera. Pack any necessary medications.

Cultural Sensitivity

Respect local customs and traditions. When visiting local communities, ask for permission before taking photos. Be mindful of your interactions with animals and avoid causing them stress.

Food and Drink

Try local Andean cuisine, including soups, quinoa, and potatoes. Be cautious with street food and ensure your water is bottled or purified. Coca tea is widely available and helps with altitude adjustment.
