Trip Overview

Chili River Rafting: Half-Day Adventure Near Arequipa

Get ready for an awesome adventure rafting down the Chili River! You’ll be right next to the huge Misti and Chachani volcanoes near Arequipa (which sits at about 7661 feet or 2335 meters altitude). This whole trip takes about 3 hours, with around 1 hour and 20 minutes of actual rafting time. It’s perfect if you love being outdoors and want some excitement.

The rapids are fun for pretty much everyone, whether you’re totally new to rafting or you’ve done it loads before. The views are incredible, and the river itself is pretty interesting. Way back, people living here thought the river was sacred which is pretty cool. You can jump on this trip easily with start times at 8 AM, 11 AM, or 2 PM. It’s a great way to add some splashy fun to your time in Arequipa.

Day by Day Schedule

So here’s the plan: First, we’ll pick you up right from where you’re staying in Arequipa. We drive you out to the starting point by the river in the Chilina Valley. Once there, the guides give you all the gear you need – like a wetsuit (cause the water’s chilly!), a helmet, and a life vest. They’ll give you a quick safety talk, show you how to paddle, and tell you what to do. Don’t worry, they make it super clear.

Then, it’s time to hop in the raft and hit the water! You’ll paddle through exciting rapids – nothing too crazy if you’re a beginner, but definitely fun. You’ll definitely get splashed! Along the way, you get amazing views of the Misti volcano (around 19101 feet / 5822 meters high) and Chachani volcano (towering at about 19872 feet / 6057 meters). The guides know the river inside out and usually point out cool stuff. After about an hour and twenty minutes of paddling and splashing, you’ll reach the end point. You can dry off, maybe have that snack we bring, and then we drive you back to Arequipa, full of good vibes. People often say “¡Qué chévere!” after this trip, which basically means it’s awesome.

More About the Chili River

This river is super important for Arequipa. It starts way up high in the Andes mountains near Puno and Cusco, where the snow melts. That’s why the water is pretty cold, around 8∘C (that’s about 46∘F). It flows through a national reserve, then down through the valley near Arequipa, and keeps going all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

It waters the fields around here, which has been vital for farming for ages. Before the Spanish came in the 1500s, the local people depended on it and thought of it as a god. The name “Chili” apparently comes from the Aymara language and means “rattle” – like the sound the river makes tumbling over rocks.

Heads up: During the rainy season, usually December to March, the river can get really high and fast. Sometimes it’s too dangerous for rafting then, so trips might get cancelled or changed. The rest of the year, it’s usually great fun.

More Tour Information

Quick Trip Facts

  • Total Time: About 3 hours from pickup to drop-off.
  • Time on the Water: Around 1 hour 20 minutes.
  • Start Times: 8:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM.
  • Difficulty: Generally considered Class II-IV rapids, which means it’s exciting but manageable for most people, including adventurous beginners. River conditions can change though, especially in rainy season.

What You Should Bring (Recommendations)

  • Swimsuit: Best to wear this under your clothes when you get picked up, makes changing into the wetsuit way easier.
  • Towel: For drying off after you peel off the wetsuit.
  • Sunscreen: Super important! The sun in Arequipa is strong, especially being at high altitude and reflecting off the water. Slap it on!
  • Bug Spray: Good idea, especially near the river banks, just in case there are mosquitos around.

  • (Maybe) A strap for your glasses: If you wear glasses or sunglasses, a strap to keep them secure is a really good idea so they don’t end up in the river!
