Next up we hit the Andes viewpoint It’s way up at 4800 meters (15748 feet) in Patapampa pass seriously the highest point of the whole shebang The views from there are just unreal You can see for miles get a real sense of the scale of things
We should roll into Chivay the Colca Valley capital around noon for some lunch Find a local joint grab some grub you know the drill After lunch they’ll drop you at your hotel or hostel Time to chill out for a bit maybe wander around Chivay check out the town at your own pace Chivay itself is pretty interesting gives you a feel for small town life in the Andes
Then at 3 pm we’re back at your hotel hostel for a ride to the Calera hot springs It’s about an hour drive Pretty relaxed thing to do These hot springs are optional though and the entrance fee like six bucks isn’t part of the tour price But hey hot springs after a day of travel why not
Seven pm dinner time We’re off to a local restaurant for eats and a folklore dance show Should be fun get some local flavor with dinner and see some traditional dances After that back to your hotel hostel for the night
Day two starts with breakfast at the hotel hostel Then after breakfast we’re driving two hours to Cruz del Condor This place Condor Cross man it’s where you really see how deep this canyon is Plus condors flying all over the place It’s a condor nesting site so they’re usually around
Once we’re at Cruz del Condor (3800 meters 12467 feet) you get to take in the views They are seriously breathtaking really puts things in perspective And yeah the condors are amazing to watch soaring around so effortlessly Spend some time there soak it all in
Time to head back to Chivay from Condor Cross but we’re stopping at Antawilke and Maca on the way Antawilke has hundreds of pre-Inca Inca terraces Still being used today to grow stuff like corn quinoa kiwicha It’s pretty wild to see these ancient farming techniques still going
Maca is next little colonial church town square kinda place We’ll check it out see some of the local Andean people rocking their traditional needlework dresses Especially the women their dresses are something else Gives you a real glimpse into the local culture you know
Back in Chivay again we’ll grab lunch at a local restaurant Then it’s a drive back to Arequipa Should be back in Arequipa around 530 pm And that’s the 2-day Colca Canyon trip done and dusted A real experience for sure

COLCA CANYON TRAVEL GUIDE Your Insider Scoop for an Awesome Trip
Alright listen up you’re heading to Colca Canyon smart move It’s incredible But to really nail this trip and have a blast here’s the real deal insider info you need to know Think of it as tips from a buddy who’s been there done that
Altitude Acclimatization Rule Number One Seriously Arequipa itself is already high Don’t just jump off the plane and go hike a mountain Give yourself a day or even just half a day in Arequipa to chill Take it easy first 24 hours No crazy hikes no running marathons you get the idea Your body needs to adjust Drink coca tea yeah it actually helps or just regular herbal tea loads of water too Lay off the heavy food and booze when you first arrive ok? Trust me on this one.
Sun Protection is NOT Optional Dude the sun up there is intense Like seriously burn-you-to-a-crisp intense Even if it feels cool you’re way closer to the sun at that altitude Sunscreen high SPF like 50 or even higher Hat wide brimmed one not just a baseball cap Sunglasses good quality ones to protect your eyes Reapply sunscreen like every couple hours especially if you’re sweating or whatever Don’t be a lobster on day two alright?
Layers Layers Layers Think Andean Onion Weather in the Andes is bipolar Morning sunrise freezing Then midday sun blazing hot Then afternoon clouds roll in gets chilly again Then evening and night yeah you guessed it cold again Layers are your best friend Start with a base layer t-shirt long-sleeve shirt Then a fleece or warm sweater Then a jacket windproof waterproof even better That way you can peel off layers as you heat up and pile them back on when it cools down Be prepared for anything.
Hydrate
Altitude makes you dehydrate faster you won’t even realize it Carry a water bottle refill it everywhere you can Aim for at least 2-3 liters a day minimum More if you’re hiking or sweating Dehydration at altitude sucks big time headaches fatigue all that nasty stuff Just drink water constantly you’ll thank me later.
Snack Attack Pack Smart Munchies Long drives between places sometimes And you might get peckish especially at altitude Bring your own snacks trail mix energy bars fruit crackers whatever you like Yeah you get meals on the tour but having snacks on hand is clutch for those in-between moments Keeps your energy up keeps the hanger away you know.
Camera Game Gotta Be Strong Like Really Strong Colca Canyon views are not just pretty they’re mind-blowing jaw-dropping epic You will want photos trust me Make sure your camera your phone whatever you’re using is ready to rock Extra battery yeah batteries drain faster in the cold and altitude Extra memory card you will take a gazillion photos Clean your lens too dusty roads and all that Maybe even a portable charger power bank Don’t be the person who runs out of battery just when a condor flies by right?
Respect the Locals Vibe Respect is Key You’re visiting their home their land their culture Be cool be polite be respectful Say please gracias thank you por favor Don’t be loud obnoxious or demanding Ask before you take photos of people especially in villages Learn a few basic Spanish phrases locals appreciate the effort Treat their culture with respect and you’ll have a way better experience guaranteed.
Spanish A Little Goes a Long Way Yeah the tour guide speaks English but you’ll interact with locals who mostly speak Spanish Knowing even just a few basic phrases makes a huge difference Hola buenos dias buenas tardes buenas noches gracias por favor de nada It shows you’re making an effort and people respond to that Plus it’s kinda fun to try even if you butcher the pronunciation.
Bargaining in Markets It’s a Thing But Be Cool Chivay market is cool for souvenirs and local stuff Bargaining is expected kinda part of the game but be polite about it Don’t try to rip people off they’re just trying to make a living A smile and friendly haggle goes further than being aggressive If you’re not comfortable bargaining just pay the price they ask it’s usually not gonna break the bank anyway.
Just Enjoy the Ride Man Seriously This Colca Canyon trip is not just about ticking off sights it’s about the whole experience The views the people the culture the air the everything Relax soak it all in Don’t be glued to your phone the whole time actually look around Talk to people ask questions Be present in the moment It’s an amazing place just let it blow your mind you know?
Follow these tips and you’re golden You’re gonna have an epic Colca Canyon adventure Seriously enjoy every minute it’s a trip you won’t forget
So what’s the deal with altitude sickness on this trip?
Altitude is a real thing up there Arequipa is already pretty high then you go higher Take it easy the first day in Arequipa drink plenty of water coca tea can help avoid heavy meals and booze at first. Listen to your body you know.
Best time of year to hit up Colca Canyon?
Weather wise April to October is prime time Dry season sunny skies perfect for views and trekking. June to August is peak tourist season though if you want fewer crowds maybe shoulder months like April May or Sept Oct are better.
What kinda clothes should I pack for this?
Layers man layers Think you’re gonna peel an onion Mornings and evenings can be chilly especially at altitude daytime sun can be strong Pack warm jacket fleece hat gloves sunscreen sunglasses essential. Comfortable walking shoes are a must too you’ll be doing some strolling.
Is visiting the Calera Hot Springs actually worth the extra cash?
Totally depends on you If you dig hot springs yeah it’s a nice way to chill out after a day of travel and high altitude It’s volcanic water supposed to be good for you some say therapeutic. If you’re not a hot springs person no biggie you can explore Chivay instead.
Are all my meals covered on this tour or what?
Nope not all Breakfast on day two is included it says 1B in the inclusions Lunch on day one in Chivay is included. Dinners and other lunches in Chivay are on your own dime which is actually cool cuz you can try different local places.
Roughly how much extra spending money should I bring along?
Entrance fees you gotta pay that National Reserve and hot springs if you go. Then tips for your guide always appreciated if they do a good job. Plus snacks drinks souvenirs you know. Maybe budget around 100 to 200 Soles extra cash should cover it all depends on your spending habits.
What are the hotel or hostel options like in Chivay?
Chivay’s got a range of places from basic backpacker hostels to comfier hotels Depends on your budget and comfort level. The tour price usually doesn’t include accommodation so you book separately gives you more choice anyway.
Will the guide actually speak English or is it just advertised?
Yeah for real English speaking guide is included in the tour price They’re used to dealing with international travelers so no worries there communication wise.
That National Reserve entrance fee is that like unavoidable?
Yep gotta pay it 70 Soles It’s for protecting the Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve and the animals there Think of it as your contribution to conservation you’re helping keep those vicuñas and llamas happy.
And the hot springs fee that’s separate too right?
Yup 15 Soles extra if you want to go to Calera Hot Springs Optional cost not included in the main tour price. Pay it there at the entrance if you decide to soak.
How long is the tour actually like day-to-day?
Two days one night as advertised. Day one is Arequipa to Chivay Day two is Chivay Condor Cross back to Arequipa. It’s a pretty full two days but the pace is relaxed not super rushed you get to see a lot without being completely knackered.
What kind of transportation are we talking about tourist bus or what?
Tourist bus yeah They’re usually reasonably comfy for the distances involved. Not luxury coaches but decent enough for getting around the Andes you know.
How physically demanding is this whole Colca Canyon thing?
Easy to moderate level I’d say. Mostly driving between places Some short walks at viewpoints and villages but no crazy hardcore trekking or anything like that. Anyone reasonably fit can handle it.
Should I book this tour way in advance or can I wing it?
Good idea to book ahead especially during peak tourist season like June to August Popular tours can fill up especially if you’re fussy about dates or hotel choices. If you’re going in the off-season you might have more flexibility but booking ahead just takes the stress out.
What happens if I decide last minute I don’t want to go to the hot springs anymore?
No problem at all The hot springs are totally optional Just tell your guide you’re gonna chill in Chivay instead explore the town at your own pace They’ll drop you off in town and you can rejoin the group later for dinner or just meet them the next morning for day two. Flexibility is key you know.
