Trip Overview
- Destination: Arequipa/Colca Canyon.
- Duration: 3 days.
- Price per person: $300.
The Colca Valley presents a geographical area of Andean terrain, populated by multiple small towns established during the Spanish colonial period.
The region remains occupied by individuals of the Collaguas and Cabanas cultures who maintain ancestral practices and continue the cultivation of pre-Inca terraced agricultural systems.
The term Colca refers to small storage units constructed from mud and stone, integrated into the cliff faces of the valley and canyon. These structures functioned as repositories for food items such as potatoes, quinoa, and other Andean crops during the Inca and pre-Inca eras. They also served as burial sites for individuals of importance.
Day by Day Schedule
Departure occurs at 7:30 am from Arequipa, initiating a 160 km drive to the town of Chivay, the capital of the Caylloma Province. The initial phase of the excursion involves observation of the Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu volcanoes. Subsequently, the transport enters the National Reserve of Salinas y Aguada Blanca, where a brief stop facilitates observation of wild Vicuñas in their natural habitat.
This point is located at approximately 13123 feet (4000 meters) above sea level. Progression leads to Alto Sumbay, an Andean community situated at the reserve’s opposite boundary. This area provides observation of natural rock formations and views of the rear aspects of the Misti and Chachani volcanoes. A traditional Andean “Mate de Coca” beverage or alternative hot drink is available at a roadside establishment to mitigate potential altitude sickness. Bathroom facilities are accessible at this location.
The route continues through Tocra, a high plain exceeding 14435 feet (4400 meters), where lakes populated by wild birds and panoramic views of the Antiplano, including Llamas and Alpacas, are observable.
The highest elevation reached during the tour is Pata Pampa, at 16109 feet (4910 meters), offering views of the Ampato, Sabancaya, Hualca-Hualca, Mismi (source of the Amazon River), and Cordillera de Chila volcanoes. Upon approaching the town of Chivay at 11978 feet (3651 meters), the multi-colored terraces of the Colca Valley become visible. The route proceeds to Coporaque town, with a visit to the Lodge La Casa de Mamayacchi for lunch. (Lunch cost is not included.) Post-lunch, an optional one-hour walk through Coporaque and its environs is offered. Return to the transport precedes a visit to natural hot springs. (Entrance fee and personal towels are not included.) Transport to the hotel or lodge concludes the day.
Breakfast is served early, followed by departure to the Cruz del Condor viewpoint. Upon arrival, the group is divided; a segment continues with the transport and driver to Cabanaconde, where the trek guide is met, and a two-day hike into the canyon begins. The route descends to the Oasis in Sangalle, where a lunch break is taken.
This section involves a descent into the canyon, providing a sense of immersion. From the Oasis, the route ascends partway up the opposite canyon wall to join the road to Malata and Tapay.
The route continues along the Colca Wall, then descends through villages and fields to San Juan de Chuccho. Overnight accommodation and dinner are provided
Departure occurs at 4:00 am after a breakfast to commence the ascent out of the canyon. This section is a steep route. Condor sightings are possible.
Arrival at San Miguel, outside Cabanaconde, occurs between 8:30 am and 9:00 am, where the driver and transport meet the group.
