Overview of Temperature Ranges
Colca Canyon spans elevations from about 3,400 m down to 1,000 m and that creates two distinct temperature bands. At the rim around Chivay mornings hover near 10 °C and by midday they rise to approximately 20 °C. Lower down toward Cabanaconde it can hit close to 25 °C in the afternoon then plunge to 12 °C at night.
Sometimes you step out and feel calm air brushing your face then—out of nowhere—a gust that almost stops you in your tracks.
Seasonal Patterns
Dry Season (April to October)
The skies stay clear roughly 90 % of the time and rainfall is almost zero. High UV levels—often at 12 or 13 on sunny days—means sunscreen is nonnegotiable. Wind at Cruz del Condor ramps up to near 15 mph during late morning.
Feels gentle one minute intense the next.
Rainy Season (November to March)
Showers pick up in intensity by January. Expect 1 to 3 mm per day on average and cloud cover around 40 %. Trails get slick. Sometimes the drop is a drizzle all day. Other times a heavy downpour hits within minutes.
I sweat thinking about it.
Transitional Months (March – April, October – November)
You get unpredictable swings. One dawn clear, midday storms roll in, then calm returns by dusk. Approximately 5 % chance of rain on a typical October afternoon but if you leave gear behind you’ll regret it.
Daily Fluctuations and Microclimates
Morning Calm
Early light brings crisp air, near 8–12 °C at the rim and up to 18 °C low in the canyon. Ideal for trekking. Hard not to pause and stare.
Afternoon Variability
Sun heats the walls sharply. Temperatures spike to anywhere from 20 °C at 3,400 m down to 27 °C by the river. UV remains intense. Clouds can build within 30 minutes and drop 0.5 mm in a flash.
Night Chill
After sunset the air cools rapidly. At Chivay it dips to 7 °C. At Cabanaconde around 10 °C. Wrap up, I mean really bundle.
No kidding.
Weather Risks and Precautions
- High UV index requires SPF 50 or higher
- Winds can gust unexpectedly at lookout points
- Low humidity (15–50 %) leads to dry skin and dusty trails
- Rapid temp swings may trigger headaches at altitude
Sometimes you roll the dice with the sky.
Packing and Gear Advice
- Layered clothing: thermal base, fleece mid-layer, shell jacket
- A packable rain poncho or light waterproof cover
- Sunglasses with UV protection and a wide-brim hat
- Electrolyte packets; altitude and dry air sap your energy fast
Rain gear packable. A hoodie. Maybe an extra pair of socks. I wonder if I overpacked.
Final Thoughts
Climatic shifts in Colca Canyon keep you on your toes. Prepare for clear mornings, blistering sun mid-day and brisk evenings. With the right kit you’ll move from chill to heat and back again without a hitch.
