Ollantaytambo Inca fortress

Drive about 10 minutes from Pachar and there it is, Ollantaytambo. Stone walls still stand, Inca streets still plain. Quiet at the start. Then you look up and—boom—massive terraces everywhere. Kind of surreal.

Explore the Moray terraces

Head out of town toward Moray. Those circular steps cut into the earth. Like a giant green arena. You might think it’s just rows. But the microclimates twist your head. I found myself staring for minutes. It’s… impressive.

Check out the Maras salt pans

Just a few clicks down the road from Moray. Thousands of salt pools zigzag the hillside. Bright white under the sun. Takes your breath. Somehow it looks like lace stitched into the ground. Bring your sunglasses. Or you’ll be blinded.

Kayak on Piuray Lagoon

Piuray hides about 30 km east of Urubamba—give or take. Glassy water at 3,400 m altitude. Perfect for a kayak spin. First lesson, balance. Then a slow paddle. Mountains all around. Wind picks up. Heart racing. You feel free.

ATV ride near Huaypo Lagoon

Huaypo sits near Maras, just under 3,600 m. ATV tracks wind by the lagoon. Simple dirt roads. Then fast sections. Mud splatters. Adrenaline. Expect dust. And big smiles.

Explore Pisac Inca City

Drive or colectivo to Pisac. Up on a hill above town, ancient stones. Original terraces. Fences? None. Just you and the wind. I’ve done Machu Picchu but this spot hit me harder somehow. Steep at first, then—views. Panoramic.

Browse Pisac handicraft stalls

Back in town, the market. Wool blankets, bright pony. Stalls line the cobbled paths. Most stuff repeats. But peek around the back alleys. You find weavers selling real patterns. Buy directly from them or just watch.

Raft on the Urubamba River

La Curva del Diablo. Sounds wild. And it is. Rapids for about 15 km. Shaky rafts. Paddles out. The water cold. Shouts and laughter. Heart thumps. Then calm sections—easy. Total thrill.

Rappel at Pachar

Cross the river from the old train stop. There’s a rock face. Rappelling lines drop down. You clip in, and step off. The cliff shakes your stomach. Then you hang, suspended. Breathe. Rappel back up—or zip line if you dare.

Tandem paragliding over Chinchero

Chinchero’s plateau brings stable winds. You and a guide strap in. Run into the breeze. Lift off. Suddenly you’re a bird. Valley floor fades. Snow peaks near. Sky quiet. Heart in throat.

Try weaving with locals in Chinchero

At 3,800 m, cold bites. But looms buzz. Local artisans show you. Hands fly. Wool dyes swirl in water. You twist fibers. Patterns emerge. Slow, patient work. Somehow meditative.

Bike from Moray to Maras

Grab a mountain bike in Moray. Pedal down to Maras. It’s about a 200 m drop—but you feel it. Path curves, then straight. Dust kicks up. Salt mines appear. You grin. One-day blast.

Hike to Huchuy Qosqo

Lamay plateau far north. Ancient Inca City named Huchuy Qosqo. Some say it was a palace. Stone rooms, water channels. 3,600 m altitude. The hike takes half a day—give or take. Ruins sparse. Views huge.

Climb to the Sun Gate near Ollantaytambo

Not the one by Machu Picchu. This is local Inti Punku. Sign says two hours to old quarries. You climb, breathe heavy. At the top, valley below. Sun slants through clouds. Magic moment.

Drop by Alqa Museum of Andean folk art

Back near Ollantaytambo’s streets. A small museum. Textiles drape the walls. Pottery, carvings. You can taste a local stew here. I wished I had more time—felt like just scratching the surface.
