Passenger pickup from hotels begins at 4:00 AM. A private vehicle with an English-speaking guide initiates transport through the town of Yura. Direct travel proceeds to the Condor Cross viewpoint. A breakfast stop is made in a Colca Valley village. Arrival at the Condor Cross is approximately 8:30 AM. This location provides a view of one of the world’s deepest canyons mountains and condor flight.
The return journey includes stops at the villages of Pinchollo Maca and Yanque. These villages contain colonial churches suitable for photography and interaction with locals wearing traditional attire. Stops are made at Antahuilque and Choquetico. Pre-Inca tombs and agricultural terraces are visible at these locations.
Arrival at Yanque occurs around 11:00 AM. A trek commences to the Uyo Uyo archaeological complex. This site is located on the valley’s right side. Uyo Uyo served as an administrative center during the pre-Inca period constructed by the Collaguas culture. The architecture resembles a smaller version of Machu Picchu. Features include narrow streets water canals and Inca farming terraces. These terraces appear as amphitheaters on the mountainsides. Local agricultural practices are observed along the trail. Storage structures known as qolqas are visible on mountain cliffs. After the trek optional access to thermal baths is available. Natural hot springs are located within the valley. An entrance fee of 15 soles per person applies. Bathing suits are required.
Lunch is served in Chivay at approximately 2:00 PM. The return journey to Arequipa includes a stop at the Volcanoes viewpoint the highest point at 16,108 feet/4910 meters above sea level. Subsequent stops include Tocra National Park where birdlife alpacas and llamas are observed. Pampa Cañahuas provides views of vicuñas within the Aguada Blanca and Salinas National Reserve. These South American camelids possess fine fibers. Arrival in Arequipa is anticipated by 6:30 PM.
