The Journey: What It's Like

So, you’ll be traveling in a comfortable tourist bus. A guide who speaks both English and Spanish will be on board. The drive itself is pretty spectacular, taking you across the altiplano – those huge, high-altitude plains you see in the Andes mountains. You’ll be crossing part of the western Andes range.

Keep your eyes peeled and your camera handy! The landscapes are amazing. You’ll see massive mountains, wetlands (called bofedales locally), maybe some high-altitude lakes, and for sure, herds of llamas and alpacas just chilling by the road. If you get lucky, you might even spot some flamingos later in the trip.

The bus makes a few planned stops so you’re not just sitting the whole time. Here are the main ones:

  • Highest Point Stop: Get ready for this one! The bus stops at the absolute highest point of the road trip, way up at 4,910 meters (that’s about 16,110 feet!). It’s seriously high altitude. On a clear day, the views over the snow-covered mountains (“nevados”) are just incredible. Your guide might also point out some unique birds that live way up here, like the “Ajoya” (Giant Andean Coot) and the Andean Goose. Just take it slow getting off the bus here – the thin air can really hit you!
  • Pampa Cañahuas Stop: We’ll also make a stop at Pampa Cañahuas. This area is part of a national reserve and sits generally above 4,000 meters / 13,100 feet. It’s famous as a great place to spot herds of vicuñas. These guys are related to llamas but they’re wild, super elegant, and protected. Seeing them roaming free is a real highlight for lots of travelers.
  • Lagunillas Viewpoint Stop: There’s another stop at a viewpoint near Lagunillas (this spot is also very high, around 4,650 meters / 15,256 feet). Sometimes people call it the Volcanoes Lookout. You can often see high-altitude lagoons from here, and if the season is right, you might spot Andean Flamingos wading in the shallow water. Seeing pink flamingos with mountains in the background is pretty cool!

After these stops and soaking in all that amazing Andean scenery, the bus continues towards Puno. You should arrive in the city of Puno (back down to about 3,827 meters / 12,556 feet) around 7:30 PM (19:30). Keep in mind arrival times are always approximate – traffic or road conditions can cause small delays. The bus will drop you off conveniently near the main square (Plaza de Armas) in the center of Puno, making it easy to walk to many hostels and hotels.

Quick Tips for This Trip

  • Altitude, Altitude, Altitude!: Seriously, this bus trip spends a lot of time at very high altitudes. Drink plenty of water before and during the ride. Go easy on heavy food beforehand. Locals often use coca tea or candies – maybe give them a try. Be prepared you might feel a bit dizzy or get a headache, especially at the highest stop. It’s normal but tell the guide if you feel really unwell.
  • What to Bring on the Bus: Keep your daypack with you, not stored under the bus. You’ll want easy access to water, some snacks (it’s a long ride!), your camera, sunglasses, and sunscreen (the sun is strong up high!). Also, definitely have a warm layer handy – like a fleece or jacket. Even if Chivay is warm, the high-altitude stops can be windy and cold!
  • Be Flexible with Time: The 7:30 PM arrival in Puno is an estimate. Peruvian travel sometimes involves slight delays. It’s best not to schedule something super important immediately upon arrival. Just relax and enjoy the ride!
  • Booking: This is a popular route, especially during peak season. It’s a good idea to book your seat in advance, either through your accommodation in Chivay, online if possible, or via a reputable travel agency there.
